I came to college with no intention of joining a sorority. I recalled every scene from Legally Blonde and every other movie or TV show that (wrongfully) depicted typical sorority girls. I always thought, “I’ll never pay that much money to have friends.”
Boy, was I wrong.
I spent my entire first semester of college meeting different girls in each of the ten sororities at Ohio University. And what I saw what completely different from the usual views I had of sorority girls. What instead I saw were smart, strong women who were trying their hardest at college like the rest of us. Women who were trying so desperately hard to become successful in their fields. And most importantly, I saw girls who told me so much about the support system they had found in their sisters. And not to mention all the cute t-shirts. I was obsessed with seeing all their t-shirts. Maybe that’s why I am our current merchandise chair!
I made the decision to go Greek during my sophomore year, and while I went through formal recruitment, I always knew in the back of my mind that Alpha Delta Pi was going to be my home away from home. I cried happy tears on Bid Day when I opened my envelope and saw Alpha Delta Pi’s crest at the top of the card. I sent a shaky selfie of me with my card to my mother, who was ecstatic for me even though she knew nothing about Greek life.
I may not know every girl in my chapter as well I would like to, but I can say that I have found a support system of some of the strongest and kindest women I know. I got a Big who is the same major as me ( and who I had only met twice prior to her becoming my big). She has become my best friend in the world. I am so lucky to have gotten her and to have become such a dynamic duo. I found a Little this year who couldn’t fit me more (we’re both nerds who love Studio Ghibli and Star Wars, who knew!) and am so thankful to have such a wonderful family in ADPi. I have friends who live at the house and visit often, and it’s so nice to have people who will listen to you when you’re stressed or just need to talk or share a laugh with. I often joke that Bid Day was one of the best days of my life, but it truly was. Knowing that I will have this sacred sisterhood to look back on all my life is so amazing to me, and I can’t wait to make more memories during my senior year with my sisters.
