Living behind the blue door by Kennedy Dauphin

Updated: Jun 5, 2020

One of the best parts about joining Alpha Delta Pi is having the opportunity to live at 101 S. Court Street behind the blue door. As a potential new member (PNM) going through recruitment, every time someone talked about living “in-house” I became nervous. I was already struggling to live in a dorm room with just one other person, how was I supposed to live in a house with almost 50 other girls? However, my worries quickly faded the day after moving into the ADPi house this year.

Living in-house was one of the best decisions I’ve made. I got to live with my best friend in room eight, with so many girls who quickly became like family surrounding us. There were always people to hang out and study with, and there were always plenty of closets to raid (which, trust me, I took advantage of). There are so many amazing memories that came with living in- house, and even more amazing relationships that were formed. When it was nice out, our days were spent playing music on the porch, doing homework and dancing around. Our evenings were spent sitting on top deck watching the sun set over Ohio University’s campus. Monday nights were always spent watching the Bachelor in the basement (aka dissing Pilot Pete), and the other nights were spent playing Mario Kart or Wii Sports before binging movies on Disney+. Around Halloween, we “Boo’d” each other with bags of goodies that were left outside our bedroom door, and after the year ended we voted on and awarded in-house superlatives. Not only did I build relationships with my sisters who lived in the house with me, but I built relationships with our house boys, Joan, Tammie, and Patti. Our house boys are members of a fraternity and would help out around dinner time with setting out dinner and cleaning once it was over. They quickly became our best friends, and they were practically members of ADPi themselves. Joan is our cook and makes the meals that are a reminder of home. Tammie cleans for us, and I always knew that if I needed advice she’d be there to give it. Patti is our house mom, which means that she lives in-house with us. She got to experience all of the joy and craziness that came with the 2019-2020 in-house girls.

Although our year got cut short by COVID-19, we still text in the GroupMe congratulating our sisters on internships and fellowships, reminiscing on Joan’s pasta, and flat out saying how much we miss each other. If you’re nervous to live in-house like I was, don’t be. It was the best decision I’ve ever made. I loved it so much that I’ve decided to live in-house again, this time as a junior. I can’t wait for more Bachelor nights and Wii nights. Lastly, I definitely can’t wait to have so many new closets to raid. I wouldn’t trade my time behind the big, blue door on Court Street for anything.
