Balancing academics with ADPI by Lucy Tschetter

Updated: Jun 5, 2020

Going into my freshmen year, I originally never thought that I would want to go Greek. Sorority girls scared me, recruitment week sounded like hell, and most importantly, I thought that I would not have the time to balance a sorority with class and schoolwork. Very last minute I decided to rush, and ever since I ran home to the house with the blue door, my life has never been the same. With good time management skills, clear priorities, and a bunch of To-do lists, I have found a good system for balancing sorority life and school.

The most important skill to have while balancing a busy schedule is managing your time efficiently. Knowing the work you have to do, and the time you have to do it will help you succeed in school and also thrive in extracurriculars. One thing that make me feel more secure with my time is a To-do list. For example, I’ll write down a list of three assignments I have to do, and also jot down that I have two hours to complete them if I want to go to the date party later that night. If you give yourself a good foundation and clear intentions before you do work, I guarantee that you will be more successful in school, and therefore, more involved in your sorority.

Another way I balance my academic affairs with my sisterly responsibilities is prioritizing the things in my life. As important as sorority events are, I think that most of the women in ADPi will agree that school takes first priority – maybe that’s why we have the #1 GPA! If I’m deciding between writing a paper and going to a social, sometimes I have to be honest with myself and say that the paper is more important to work on at this time. As much as I love to spend time with girls, I have to make an equal effort in school as I do in my sorority. Life is not just fun sisterhoods and date parties!

Lastly, it’s extremely important to take care of yourself, mentally and physically! Getting good sleep, eating clean, and taking time to yourself are all pertinent to living a balanced life. Doing those things will give you the energy you need to be an active and involved student at Ohio University! Trust me, I know how hard it is to get good sleep, especially if you live at 101 South Court Street, but taking the time to give yourself a little extra love and care can make a significant difference in the way you live your life.

By developing time management skills, knowing my priorities, and focusing on self-care, I have been able to eloquently balance my studies and my sorority. At times it can be hard, but when you have a house full of girls always giving you love, it’s 100% worth it!
